Epiphone ET-270 Vintage 1970’s Cherry Burst Kurt Cobain Nirvana Guitar + Original Case

Out of stock

Here for sale is a rare 1970’s Epiphone ET-270 in a gorgeous Cherry Burst complete with the original hardcase with a yellow plush lining and the tremolo arm. This guitar was made famous by Kurt Cobain of Nirvana on the Bleach era of the band who used it extensively on tour and in the studio.

The guitar has had a re-fret and now plays like new. It features all the original tuners that hold up well, the original pick ups, the cool looking black pickguard with the Epiphone E in the centre, as well as the E on the truss rod cover. The guitar has some other interesting features such as the bass boost switch to give some more welly and cool look silver see through control knobs. The handy knob position was used to great effect by Cobain on Bleach track ‘Big Cheese’ Where you can hear him fading the intro chords using the volume knob which is very easy to access with your lower fingers on this guitar. The guitar was made in Japan and has that excellent build quality from that era. Amazingly it still has the serial number sticker on the back of the neck plate, normally these get peeled or rubbed off.

The guitar is in good condition for its age, with the odd chip or ding but this just gives it more rock ‘n’ roll character. There is a couple of chips on the sides, scratches on the back for that played in roadworn vibe. The Cherry Burst finish is very vibrant and is lighter in the centre and looks awesome. The original case looks seriously cool with the yellow lining when contrasted with the red guitar. It is in working order although the lid is missing a piece of material to keep the lid up right but that can easily be added. It also has the sought after tremolo arm which is fully functional.

The guitar is a bit like a Strat Gibson SG hybrid and has a very distinct sound and produces other worldly feedback when cranked up. Check out the Nirvana Live at Pine Street Theatre in Portland Oregon on the Sub Pop Bleach reissue to hear this guitar wailing away in all its glory. The guitar has one volume one and one tone control, and a bass boost switch for extra bass enhancement and a three way selector switch in a convenient location on the bottom of the pick guard. All the electronics are workings they should. The legendary Billy Idol has also used one live and in music videos. These guitars are very collectable for the Nirvana connection but are also great in their own right, for their distinctive sound and looks, and this a great and complete example.
