The bass has all the original bridge, electronics, frets, tuning keys, pickups, switches and the original knobs and comes with an excellent Gibson Ripper Hardshell case with a pink lining. The bass plays beautifully and is enormous fun and produces such an incredible array of sounds. The nut width is approx 41.70mm / 1.6415″, and the neck is 22.01mm / 0.8665 deep at the first fret, and 25.63 / 1.009 deep at the 12th fret. It has a C shape neck contour and a 7.25 neck radius. The frets are 2.79mm / 0.110″ wide and 0.029 / 0.73″ deep. This Ripper bass has some dings, scratches, and chips, but considering its age and it being such a great player, this is understandable, especially with the Gibson nitrocellulose finish they are made to become roadworn down the line. More so on the back of the bass than the front. You can tell this is such a great player by the way the finish has worn down on the neck and looks seriously cool. This gives the bass loads of rock ‘n’ roll character and vintage mojo. It is the kind of bass you simply will not want to put down. The serial number has worn down somewhat over the years but it is possible to make out number 18119. The case is in great condition for its age and it can be hard to find one fully functioning. There is some tolex missing in places, but the lining is in great condition, the compartment is complete and functional and the it has the lid strap. The latch on the lower left side is loose but it still functions and could be repaired if required. The pink lining looks awesome with the ebony bass.

The Ripper bass features two Bill Lawrence designed “Super Humbuckers” that is controlled by a four-way selector switch. These pickups sound unbelievable and like no other. The tonal options are fantastic with the ability to activate both pickups together in series in phase for more bite, the back pickup up only for more treble response, both pickups together in phase parallel for more bottom end, and lastly both pickups together out of phase, for very funky, dirty type tonality.

1 In Phase — Series
2 Bridge Only — Single
3 In Phase — Parallel
4 Out of phase — Series

These basses have been favoured by many of the greats over the years such as Mark Evans from AC DC, Gene Simmons of Kiss, Suzi Quattro, and of course Krist Novoselic of Nirvana who played one from 1990 and beyond. One of his many Gibson Ripper’s now resides in the EMP Experience Music Project in Seattle. Krist used one on Nirvana’s Nevermind album as well as all the band’s tours and has such a great sound you can see why. It is an awesome bass, even the name is just badass ‘The Ripper’ and this is the coolest finish in ebony.
